All are suitable for growing in tropical and sub-tropical areas from Cairns to Melbourne.  Species and varieties only suitable for temperate areas are not produced.

The following is a brief list of plants cultivated:

Citrus – all types of citrus are suitable for growing in warm areas. This includes oranges, lemons, mandarins, kumquats, limes, finger limes, kaffir limes, lemonades, pommelo, tangelo and grape fruit.

In high rainfall areas including coastal areas, citrus require: disease, nematode, heat and frost resistance.

In selecting rootstock for citrus it s also important to consider the ultimate tree size required. Full size, semi dwarf and fully dwarf rootstocks are
available. The length of time from planting to fruiting is another important consideration. In the home garden, the length and timing of the fruiting season is also relevant.

Mulberries – all types of mulberries are suitable for growing in warm areas. Varieties vary tremendously so selection needs careful consideration. Both black and white types are available with modern varieties resulting from plant breeding programs being far superior to more traditional types.

 

 

Avocado – there are many types of avocadoes available for production. Harvest periods need to play a crucial role in variety selection with March to December production available.

 

Grapes – only a limited selection of grapes produce consistent high crops in warm areas. A trellis or fence is required

 

Nuts – several species of nuts produce high yields in warm areas. Macadamia and pecans are particularly suitable.

 

Custard Apple and Sour Sops – are great in warm areas with a selection of varieties available.

 

Coffee – grows profusely in warm areas

 

Dragon Fruit – is a warm area crop producing delicious fruit over an extended season. Several types are available for growing on a trellis.

 

Guava – is a warm climate fruit with a range of types available. The dwarf cherry guava is particularly popular as a feature hedge.

 

Mango – is suitable for growing in all warm areas with a range of varieties available. Fruit yield will decrease if heavy rain falls during the flowering period around August.
 

Passionfruit – is an extremely productive species with a range of types available. Disease tolerance in relation to various production areas is an important consideration.

 

Persimmons – are suitable for warm area production with astringent and non-astringent types available.

 

Pomegranate – requires careful selection of a low chill variety to ensure good fruit production.

 

Star Fruit – a prolific producer of quality fruit provided careful attention is applied to variety selection.

 

Tamarillo – a type of tree tomato suitable for coastal production in soils with good internal drainage.  Several types are available with very high yield potential.

 

Figs – yielding fresh fruit for 7 months of the fear figs are a great selection in any area. Several modern varieties are available.

 

Stone Fruit – low chill peaches and nectarines produce high yields of quality fruit. Careful variety selection is essential.

 

Papaw – red and yellow types are available.

 

Tropical fruit from Brazil – the most popular of these are the jaboticaba (grape tree) and the Grumi Chama (cherry tree). Superior varieties are available to ensure high yields of quality fruit. Fruit is completely free of fruit fly and other pests with mature plants producing several crops each year. These species are essential in any home garden.

 

Herbs – a wide range of species can be successfully produced including everlasting shallots, perennial (20 year) chillies, peppermint, rosemary, ginger, galangal and turmeric.
